Basic Cooking Tips
Will Break Your Cooking Block.

Why does it seem like "other" people know all sorts of cooking tips and can whip up a meal with hardly any effort?

• They must be more sophisticated.

• Their taste buds are more advanced.

• They were born with a strong culinary gene.

• Did someone teach them how to cook? (Probably)

• Most likely they have just cooked more. (They are fearless)

Watch prime time TV and see how simple it is... just splash and dash ingredients together then… success dinner whipped up in 10 minutes or less.

Let's face it... that TV stuff is just that… stuff, entertainment, theater, not cooking basics. Don't watch cooking competitions hoping you will learn how to cook.

Reasons people with a cooking block avoid cooking:

• Lack of understanding cooking basics

• Shortage of time

• Lack of organization in the kitchen

• They think a good meal has to be complicated

I had a cooking block for years. I truly never wanted, or needed to learn to cook. There are plenty of options for hunters and gatherers. I could hunt down my favorite restaurant, or gather something quick through the drive through.

Maybe if I was feeling domestic, I would go to the grocery store and pick up one of their prepared meals. If I make the salad then its a homemade meal…right?

Well I realized that I had to finally face the music (or the kitchen) and get over it, and really embrace and use basic cooking tips.

The Cooking Block is dedicated to teaching cooking 101 for those with a cooking block.

Here we will teach basic cooking tips, so even a beginning cook can be a confident home chef. Don’t worry if you think I will be your guide...I will-but we are not alone.

We will have a professional chef (not me!) to guide us all the way.

Who better to lead a group of non-cooks? I understand the feelings of having a cooking block. I understand the urge to run from the kitchen.

Our guide has over 20 years working as a professional chef…we are in good hands.

Benefits of learning how to cook

• Stress reduction

• Saves money

• Improves health

• Strengthens the family

Cooking tips you will learn

• The steps for easier meal preparation

• What kitchen tools are essential (a great Chef knife for starters)

• The proper way to cook common foods, such as chicken, fish, steak.

• Easy recipes for beginning cooks

Let's start out with basic cooking tools, do we have the right kitchen gadgets and know how to use them?

Next we will leave the splashing and dashing cooking method for the camera. We will learn common cooking conversions.

The right measurements will give us a better dinner (lunch or breakfast, you get the idea) More importantly measuring will allow us to be able to re-create the meal.

Now for the language barrier, let’s learn the language of cooking. If we understand basic culinary definitions we will cook better...or at least understand the recipe better.

Cooking tips and how to:

Tips for preparing seafood

How to cook perfect prime rib

How to re-create leftovers (not just reheat)

How and when to prep (this one is an important one)

Many times I have failed before I’ve started. I’ve failed to prepare. Often the inexperienced (myself included) set out with a recipe in hand, scan the directions, think "easy, even I can do this".

Next we quickly run through the store getting the ingredients to cook dinner… which is already 45 minutes late. Before the groceries are out of the bag, the recipe has failed. Why?

Lack of thoughtful preparation will always be the downfall of any project, cooking is no different.

By the time you have read and practiced the cooking 101 tips (here lies the key, practice), you will no longer have a cooking block.

Instead you will have found a cooking block…a foundation, a neighborhood, a community of people who have come together to learn the learn cooking tips finally enjoy cooking.
