We are in an age where cooking shows, cookbooks and magazines dedicated to cooking have increased in popularity.

There are several channels on the TV dedicated to celebrity chefs, or competitions looking for the next great chef.

Here lies the irony, most people don't cook at home, and few are familiar with basic terms used to cook. We will be become even more illiterate in the kitchen if we don't take matters in our own hands.

I was amazed when I learned, there is a trend for publishers of cookbooks to eliminate words that are unfamiliar to novice cooks, words such as "Saute" or "Braise".

Instead the norm is to use more pictures as teaching tools. Pictures are great however knowing the language of cooking is important.

Removing the language for cooking will only further dilute the ability to cook at home.

A survey conducted by Betty Crocker kitchens found that

most people don't even realize how "cooking challenged" they have become.

The nation wide survey of 1,500 adults found 70 percent rated themselves "above average" with cooking knowledge. Actual quiz results from the survey resulted in 62 percent are below average.

Generations ago cooking was taught at home, handed down to each generation. However times have changed, it seems like there is barely enough time to read a recipe let alone give a cooking class to the younger members of your family.

I'm aware the next set of books are geared toward kids. However our site is dedicated to learning how to cook; even if you are an adult. I find that cookbooks for kids have nice basic recipes, perfect for someone not experienced in the kitchen.

You might not find many of the common culinary terms we were discussing earlier. But as you develop your cooking skills be aware of words while you are cooking...then learn what they mean. You will cook better.

I love this book. The recipes are fantastic, easy and minimal directions. But the end result has a great wow factor.
